Collector Challenge

I chose 1998 because it feels like a real crossroads in electronic music. Minimal techno was becoming more radical, electro was being revived and reshaped, and glitch, dub, IDM and early electroclash ideas were starting to overlap. Many of the records I value most sit exactly between older machine-music traditions and sounds that would become much more important in the years that followed.

Pole

Dub Techno / Glitch / IDM. A broken Waldorf filter produced clicks and interference that Stefan Betke kept instead of removing, turning malfunction into rhythm. Combined with deep dub bass, 1 created a distinct language of error, minimalism and groove. In 1998 it became a major reference point, and for my collection it is the perfect example of technical failure becoming a compositional system.

Fucking Consumer

I-f

Electro / Neo-Electro. I-F pulled 1980s breakdance electro, New Wave and techno-pop into a new late-90s setting. With Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass, the album became an early reference point for the electroclash revival that followed. For my collection, it brings together The Hague, Bunker/Viewlexx, Italo, electro and retro-futurism in one essential 1998 release.

Kolmio EP

Philus

Minimal Techno / Glitch. Mika Vainio strips techno down to precise pulses, bleeps, space and timbre. In 1998, Kolmio already pointed toward the digital reduction later associated with Raster-Noton and Alva Noto. For my collection, it is a key link from Sähkö and Vainio to radical minimal techno, Sleeparchive and Alva Noto.

Simm City

Simulant

Electro / IDM-inflected Electro. The first release on the tiny Scopex label combines dry 808s, huge sub-bass, intricate machine sounds and funk. It became a cult record, while Scopex later gained a reputation as one of the strongest UK electro labels. For my collection, it connects Detroit vocabulary, British electro, IDM and record-collector culture.

Auto-Motif EP

Le Car

Detroit Electro / Electropunk. The final Le Car EP brings analogue machine music, Kraftwerk and New Wave ideas into a Detroit context with a strong art-school concept. After Le Car, Adam Lee Miller moved on to ADULT. and Ian Clark to Perspects. For my collection, it captures a point where several later paths in Detroit electro and the wider Clone/Den Haag network begin to branch out.

Radio 2

Wishmountain

Experimental House / Musique concrète. Herbert built Radio 2 from sounds made with an old plastic radio, yet the record still worked on the dancefloor and was played by DJs including Sven Väth and WestBam. In 1998 it showed how everyday objects, sampling and club music could meet. For me, it also marks the roots of Herbert’s later rule-based approach.

I.O.

Arovane

IDM / Electronica / Breakbeat. I.O. was Uwe Zahn’s debut as Arovane and the start of his 1998 DIN period. From deconstructed breakbeats and hip-hop structures, he developed a more melodic and highly detailed form of electronica that later fed into the City Centre Offices aesthetic. For my collection, it connects Berlin, Torsten Pröfrock’s DIN, IDM and melodic electronica.

Interactions Under Non-Local Reality

VIC 20

Electro. In 1998, Ed DMX’s Breakin’ label was part of a renewed British machine-electro movement. VIC 20 adds a scientific, computer-driven identity through titles such as “Muon Reconnaissance,” “Infiltrate Computor” and “Gedankenexperiment.” For my collection, the EP connects DMX Krew and Breakin’ with science fiction and the UK electro line that became increasingly important.
