Most music I own comes in and out of favour, and I often return to albums I once struggled with. The exception is Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music. I first bought it around 1976, aged about 11, and couldn’t finish it. I tried again around 2010, when Reed toured the album, but still couldn’t connect with it—and left the Cambridge gig early.
