Now based in New Mexico, Internationally known lyricist Raashan Ahmad and Albuquerque Attorney Joseph "DJ Kayote" Sullivan commemorate the trial for James Boyd and question the lack of a trial for Mary Hawkes, both killed by members of the Albuquerque Police Dept. This is not a push to convict, but rather for transparency and justice. DA Kari Brandenburg once held "Special Grand Jury" proceedings in all police shooting cases. No officer was ever indicted in any of these secret hearings which clearly violated Due Process for everyone else. Chief Judge at the time, Ted Baca, wrote a letter to Brandenburg asking what authority allowed these "special" proceedings. Finally the practice was suspended, and these days, following indictments of two APD officers in the Boyd case by Brandenburg, she openly states she is in fear for her safety.
